WIPO releases cybersquatting complaint data

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has released data on cybersquatting complaints filed in 2015, The Domains reported. According to WIPO, 2,754 Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) claims were filed last year, which is 4.6 percent more than in 2014.

New gTLDs accounted for 10.5 percent of complaints. TLDs .XYZ, .CLUB and .EMAIL accounted for the bulk of the complaints. Geographically, US companies led, followed by France, Germany and the United Kingdom. The number of claims in various industries also differs: Around 10 percent of all complaints came from fashion firms. Banks, financial institutions and IT companies accounted for 9 percent each. An insignificant rise in UDRP filings last year, despite a bigger number of new TLDs, proves that the latter have had little effect on cybersquatting statistics. It’s worth noting that the data provided are not complete as WIPO is not the only organization dealing with UDRP claims.
