A new phase of priority registration began for the .РУС domain. From now on, the administrators of domain names in Russian national domains .RU and .РФ can register their domain names in the new domain. A name that is similar to the one already listed in .RU or .РФ can be registered, but since the .РУС domain is Cyrillic, registering with the .RU domain should be based on transliteration rules in accordance with GOST 7.79-2000 standard. In addition, in order to exercise the right of priority registration, administrators must confirm their authority to register domains in .RU or .РФ zone.
This stage of priority registration with the .РУС domain will last until May 20. The next phase - open registration to all comers - will start on May 24.
Director of the Coordination Center for TLD RU/РФ Andrey Vorobyev said that this practice has become a logical continuation of the initiative advanced by the Institute of Internet Development (IID). "One of IID’s proposals was to create conditions that would motivate businesses to create their own websites,” he said. “This can be done by integrating the services of domain name registration into the procedure for registering a legal entity. Convenient services to select and register a domain, which sounds like an already registered brand name, will help avoid future conflicts between the owner of a brand name and the owner of a similar domain name.
Patent attorneys in Russia can serve as an example. In addition to registering trademarks, they check the availability of similarly sounding domain names in different top-level domains and offer their clients domain registration solutions, which offer both online protection and promotion of the particular brand."
As you may recall, .РУС domain was delegated in October 2014. It became the 6th Cyrillic top-level domain created under the New gTLD program. The company Russkie Imena is the domain administrator. According to the .РУС domain administrators, it is designed to unite the Russian-speaking online audience.
