The .COM top level domain remains a key global network element for more reasons than just the number of registered names. According to the World Wide Web Technology Surveys (W3Techs) statistics, this domain is used by half of all websites, or more specifically 49.6 percent. Russia’s .RU domain comes in second, however, with a 5.1 percent share it trails far behind the leader. The .NET and .ORG domains are not far behind with 4.7 and 4.4 percent, respectively.
The W3Techs statistics also shows that newer domains still do not rival older ones, as well as national domains, in terms of registered websites. Only two new domains .XYZ and .CLUB, can boast a number greater than 0.1 percent of the total number of websites in the world, while other newcomers fare even worse.
