Tesla Motors acquires Tesla.com domain name

Tesla Motors has acquired the domain name Tesla.com, DomainNameWire reports. No doubt that Tesla owners, clients and fans feel quite happy about this, for they have more than once admitted that the official Teslamotors.com domain was far from user-friendly. Moreover, the old name does not reflect the company’s activities since Tesla has expanded beyond autos and now produces its own home batteries, and therefore the word “Motors” does not make much sense anymore and misleads customers.

The domain name Tesla.com was registered in 1992, long before Tesla Motors was formed, and it is possible that one person may have been the original registrant since that time. It is interesting that in 2005, the owner refused to sell the domain name to another company named Tesla, one which bore no relation to Tesla Motors. The Tesla.com owner had to defend the domain name in a Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy and won the case.

The purchase conditions have not been disclosed. The domain name currently redirects visitors to Teslamotors.com.
