China has beaten Germany

Chinese ccTLD .CN has become the second in the world among all ccTLDs by the number of registered names. DOMAINPULSE announced this information referring to a report by the Chinese news agency Xinhua. According to its data, by the end of last year there were about 16.36 million names registered in .CN domain. Therefore, China’s ccTLD has beaten Germany’s ccTLD .DE (there are 16.02 million names registered in the German domain) and has become the second among all ccTLDs. Strictly speaking, even the first, because the largest domain .TK (Tokelau) gives registrations away to anyone for free and can be considered a ccTLD only on formal grounds.

In the last few months China has experienced a real domain boom. According to the Chinese National Network Information Center CNNIC back in June 2015 there were only 22.31 million domain names registered in the country, 12.25 million of which were .CN. Consequently, a 6-months-growth in this ccTLD amounted to more than 4 million names.
