Verisign has released the Domain Name Industry Brief, a report on the state of domain industry in the third quarter of the year. According to it, during this period 3.1 million new domain names were registered in the global network. The total number of them by the end of September reached 299 million. Thus, at the moment the landmark milestone of 300 million domains has probably been overcome.
The domain space grew by 1.1% in comparison with the previous quarter or by 5.2% in comparison with the third quarter last year. The largest domain is obviously still .COM; it has more than 120.1 million registrations. According to Verisign estimations, the number of DNS requests in the third quarter was about 120 billion per day, while it peaked at 593 billion per day.
