December is usually considered to be a month of high consumer activity, online as well. Obviously, manufacturers and distributors of counterfeit products know about this as well and expand their activities online in December. However, this year it was possible to conduct a serious attack to combat their activities. During a joint operation of special services of 27 countries 37479 webpages that violate rights of trademarks and sell counterfeit products were shut down, reports The Register.
The operation was conducted by the US Customs and Border Protection, special services from all over the world, including the ones from the UK, France, Denmark, Chile, China and Thailand took part in the operation. The information about the domains involved in the violation of the copyright was provided by Interpol and Europol. The companies that suffer from pirates, some of them from technology, entertainment, high fashion and other sectors assisted in the operation.
The current operation has become the biggest by both the number of participants and the number of shut down pirate resources. To compare, in December last year Europol shut down 292 domains related to the distribution of counterfeit products.
