One of the modern Internet pioneers, the developer and researcher Paul Vixie, speaking at the information security conference in Melbourne, gave a very unflatteringly opinion on the new gTLD program, according to The Domains. Vixie is known as the Internet Software Consortium founder, the developer of BIND DNS and many other programs. For an outstanding contribution to global network development he is honored to be in the Internet Hall of Fame.
"I think it is a money grab, – Paul Vixie responded without mincing words to the question about the new gTLD program. – “My own view is that ICANN functions as a regulator, and that as a regulator it has been captured by the industry that they are regulating." Vixie expressed an opinion that Internet users didn't feel any need for new gTLDs. Their appearance is the result of lobbist efforts from large domain registrars, just interested in bigger "range of goods" for sale.
"Companies pay the application fee of $185,000 , – Paul Vixie told. – It is a paltry sum of money for those who do business on new domains. Therefore, new 2,000 new domains will certainly appear following the first 1,900 ones. Thus, new domains are unlikely to work. They are launched one by one but don't make any commercial success". Vixie let also know that a start of the new gTLD program is to testify ICANN in the issue of corruption. "This is a non-profit public organization, and its task is to serve the public interests, but not the interest of business", – he pointed out.
