"Old" domains suffer losses

French Network Information Center Afnic, Acting Registry TLD France .FR, published the results of its research where the situation in "old" gTLDs is described. These domains are .COM, .NET, .ORG, .INFO, .BIZ, and .MOBI. The research is based on ICANN data which is a groundwork for Afnic experts to forecast the situation until the end of this year.

The situation for old domains looks rather disturbing. Specialists believe that only the .COM zone will manage to show growth following the results of 2015 (it will be about 2,8%). The registration number in the .ORG zone can remain at zero level. All the other domains will show a negative trend line: from rather small (2,1%) decrease in .NET to very painful fall in .MOBI (28%). The decrease in the .INFO and .BIZ zones will also make more than 10%.

Speaking about the percent of renewal registration, it will be, according to Afnic forecasts, satisfactory or good for the Big Three of .COM, .NET and .ORG (not lower than 75%) and very low at the same time for .INFO, .BIZ, and .MOBI (from 63% and below).

Specialists call the growing pressure from new gTLDs as the reason of these trend lines. They consider that it is too early to speak about the sad final of .INFO, .BIZ, and .MOBI, however they predict that new gTLDs will only grow further the pressure upon the positions of "old" ones.
