A number of domains reached 296 million in the world

Verisign published the data of The Domain Name Industry Brief for Q2 of 2015. According to the document, a number of domain names in the world reached 296 million. An increase, compared to the first quarter of 2015, made 0,8%, while compared to the same period of 2014 – 5,9%.

.COM controlled by Verisign remains an undisputed leader where there are 118,5 million names. About 15 million names are registered in .NET (also controlled by Verisign). Thus, there were 5,86 million registered names in all new gTLDs for the end of June – about 2% of their number in the world.

Speaking about national domains, their number increased to 288. However 66,7% of all names registered in them fall on 10 largest national domains. Tokelau .TK is a leader among these 10 domains (which is, however, an open domain related to national one only because of formal ground). German .DE, Chinese .CN, British .UK and Russian .RU follow this list.
