Blue Coat Systems, a firm that specializes in the field of cyber security, has published a report, which states that many new gTLDs are the main sources of illegal activity, for example, spam, malware, phishing attacks, botnets, etc. According to Blue Coat Systems representatives, the report is based on the reviews of company’s clients and classified “tens of millions” of domains. The company reassures that 95% of domains in no less than 10 domain zones were participating in illegal activities. It proposes to block these gTLDs entirely.
The numbers are really threatening, however, many experts strongly disagree with Blue Coat Systems. For example, editor at Domain Incite Kevin Murphy calls the results of this research “laughable”. For instance, he describes the situation with domain .ZIP. Blue Coat Systems states that 100% of the domains of this zone are involved in some form of illegal activity. But the truth is that there is only one domain registered in .zip for now - nic.zip. It belongs to the Google Registry that can hardly be suspected in unlawful actions. Also domain zone .REVIEW was ranked as “100% shady”. But there are more than 45 thousand names registered there, it is highly unlikely that Blue Coat Systems checked every one of them.
