11 new gTLDs were added to the DNS root zone yesterday. All of them are the internationalized versions of .COM and .NET, including
Cyrillic one. The domain space was widened by: .कॉम, .ком, .点看, .คอม, .नेट, .닷컴, .大拿, .닷넷, .コム, .كوم, and .קוֹם. The operator of new domain zones is Verisign, which plans to launch the domains for registration until the end of this year.
The registry agreement with ICANN on these new domains was signed in January; however need to observe balance of right holders’ interests became the reason of a delay. Imagine there is some internationalized бренд.com domain in the .COM zone. And there is also a company holding the БРЕНД trademark in parallel. Who should get a priority registration right for a бренд.ком domain name in this situation?
After long consultations, the representatives of large business managed to insist on their own. Standard Sunrise procedure is entered in the new internationalized domains. It means that the БРЕНД holder will get the advantage in the example above though at the beginning Verisign planned to provide it to holders of domain names.
