New gTLDs fail to live up to ICANN’s expectations

ICANN, Inc. ended FY15 this week. New gTLD registration volumes (as income, therefore) happened to be significantly lower than the expected. There are fewer than 6 million registered domain names in all new gTLDs. That’s just 18% from expected registrations which the corporation estimated of 33 million in early 2014.

By March, 2015, this estimate was considerably corrected, and ICANN’s expectations fell to 15 million of new gTLD registrations. However this plan was fulfilled 39% only. It is worthy of note that ICANN’s draft fiscal 2016 budget does not have a “total registrations” number at all.
