Puerto Rico will host 57th ICANN meeting

Corporation’s Board of Directors has determined where 57th ICANN meeting will take place. It will be held in San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, from October 29 till November 4 next year. This decision is interesting because ICANN is committed to hold meetings in different regions of the world. According to the schedule, 57th meeting is supposed to take place in North America. It is well known that Puerto Rico is located in the Caribbean and physically belongs to Latin America and countries of the Caribbean. However the country has a status of unincorporated U.S. territory that freely joined the USA. That way from a formal point of view ICANN’s commitment is fulfilled.

Funnily enough, ICANN’s 56th meeting the place of which haven’t been chosen yet is supposed to be held in one of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, 58th – in Europe. Witty observers in relation to this as the later candidate offer British Virgin Islands. They are situated close to Puerto Rico but formally are considered to be a part of Europe. So ICANN’s management has an opportunity to spend three meetings in a row in the Caribbean since it seems they like it there so much.
