Vox Populi has extended the sunrise period of the controversial .sucks domain, during which only trademark owners can register. The sunrise period was to end this week, with general availability set to begin today.
However, the registry released an official statement announcing a three-week extension of the sunrise period, citing the fact that many intellectual property lawyers and company executives were unaware of the registry or the availability of its names. Vox Pop’s concern would be more believable if the price of sunrise registration were not $2,000. Critics say the step is motivated by a desire to earn more money from rights holders.
Vox Pop has extended the period to June 19, with general availability starting two days later.
