Mayor of New York City Bill de Blasio summed up the results of the first six months of the .NYC domains existence. According to him, in six months .NYC “has become the fastest-growing city domain in the world – racking up over 75,000 registrations to date”. It should be noted that unlike many other city domains, for example, .BERLIN, there were no free giveaways or extreme registration discounts in .NYC. It is also important that only citizens of New York or companies that lead business there can register a domain name in .NYC.
This is why a number of 75 thousand does look quite impressive. As well as another fact: the average cost of a registered name in .NYC is $34.99 and 97% of registrants have less than 10 names. All of this suggests that the main audience of the domains are in fact citizens and entrepreneurs of NYC that are willing to pay to mark their affiliation to the city in the cyber space, not the domain speculators who buy up names in batches in anticipation of future profit.
