Domain .SUCKS did in fact launch

Yesterday probably the most disputed and controversial domain .SUCKS entered a Sunrise period. Earlier on concerns have repeatedly been expressed that the Vox Populi registry that operates the new domain could use is as a legal mean for blackmail. This is not hard to imagine that very few companies or brands would want to see their names registered for the domain that clearly has a negative meaning. The only way to be protected is to register it yourself. Reports that the price of registration in the Sunrise phase will be as much as $25 thousand fueled the flame.

,p> Last attempt to prevent the launch of .SUCKS was taken last Friday by the ICANN’s Intellectual Property Constituency (IPC). It addressed the management of the company with a letter where it asked to stop the launch of the domain. The document reads that .SUCKS domain is a “shakedown” and a “perversion of the new gTLD program’s rights protection mechanisms”.

Nevertheless, on Monday domain .SUCKS did enter a Sunrise phase. However, it should be noted that Vox Populi registry probably considered all this criticism. Earlier it stated that the price of domain registration during Sunrise period will be $2500, not $25 thousand. It reality the sum is even lower - $1999. Nonetheless, Vox Populi recommends registrars to take $2499 for the registration. Such a margin is obviously intended to attract as many registrars as possible.
