ICANN explained that the new gTLD renewal predictions are conservative

According to the ICANN’s budget for the next year published last week the renewal rate in new gTLDs will be no more than 50%. This number caused concern of the domain community since a good result for a generic top-level domain is 70% renewals. Analysts asked: what is this low projection based on? They feared that it was based on the first and clearly disappointing data concerning registration renewals in the new domain zones that ICANN received from the registries since February.

However, CANN allayed these fears. The official representative of the corporation told Domainincite domain blog that the budget draft was produced in November last year, so it can’t be based on the real data about registration renewals in new domains. ICANN representative explained that this low level of renewals was predicted because the corporation doesn’t have necessary data for a more precise analysis and projection. In this situation the corporation decided to have conservative predictions.

Donuts has an “online translation” in its corporate blog on the process of registration renewals in its domains, it published new data daily. For now the renewal number is 71%.
