Europeans perceive new domains better than other regions

The number of domain names in the new domains registered through Tucows have reached 100 thousand. Employees of the company celebrated this number with the blog entry that sums up 13 months of work with the new domains. The publication doesn’t claim to be scientifically accurate, but is undoubtedly interesting: Tucows is one of the largest domain registrars in the world and the OpenSRS platform is used by 13 thousand resellers in 150 countries of the world.

First of all, Tucows experts state that the registration growth in the new domains is pretty slow. However, they admit that they predicted such rates and hope that 2015 will be more successful.

Speaking of geography, Tucows experts note that new domains are better perceived in Europe. Probably this happens because European users are accustomed to the variety and choice in the domain space, since they have been familiar with ccTLDs for a long time. At the same time the US users remain .COM-centric, they reluctantly register names in any other domain zone. Users from Asia and Latin America are dissatisfied that the majority of the new domains use English names.

Tucows also refutes the popular opinion that the key to success is low registration fee. The best selling Tucows’ domain is .LONDON. The annual registration fee is around $40. To compare: the annual registration fee in the .COM zone is no more than $15-20. In addition to this domains .GURU, .PHOTOGRAPHY, .EMAIL, .COMPANY, .TODAY and .ROCKS are quite popular and their fee is higher that .COM’s as well.
