Policy on name collisions might be applied to new ccTLDs

The policy on name collisions in new generic top-level domains may be expanded on new country code top-level domains, including internationalized ones. ICANN’s board of directors sent a letter to the country code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) to notify about preparation to pass this resolution.

It’s referred to the domains in undelegated new domain zones that nevertheless receive traffic. The reason in most cases is that corresponding domains are used on internal networks. Accordingly, their appearance in new domain zones may lead to data leaks and other undesirable consequences. ICANN’s policy adopted in relation to new gTLDs gives registries 90 day period after the launch to solve such problems.

Many representatives of the new gTLDs registries expressed skepticism concerning the measure before. They pointed out that if the name collisions were so common, than why was it not taken into account in the ccTLDs? Obviously, if they hoped to persuade ICANN to abandon its policy, they achieved the exact opposite. Now the corporation is willing to expand its approach on all domains, including country code ones. However, it should be understood that ICANN can’t directly make new domains follow its policy and will only give recommendations and polite techniques of diplomatic influence.
