The beginning of 2015 is a significant time for the whole domain name system. Exactly 30 years ago in January of 1985 top-level domain .COM was launched to be used on the Internet, initially it was managed by the US Department of Defense. In March of the same year a first domain name was registered in the domain zone .COM.
On this occasion, Verisign that is .COM domain’s registry today announced a contest for users. It started yesterday and will last for 3 months, it’s final results will be announced in June. Users are offered to register names in the .COM domain zone. Five winners of each month will receive prizes ($5 thousand each) for the most vivid, memorable and creative domain name. And the opportunity to win a grand prize - $30 thousand. The winners will be determined by a public vote and the jury will determine the final results. Famous representatives of the domain and Internet businesses and celebrities whose names organizers haven’t disclosed by now will form the jury.
It seems that there is only one drawback in this event. Domain .COM for a while now has been perceived as the main domain of the world global network. However, according to the rules of the contest, only US citizens can take part in the competition.
