The first live new top-level domain will be sold off at auction in February

German registry Dotreise has become the first company that decided to get rid of its new generic top-level domain. We are talking about domain .REISE, which means «travel» in German.

Apparently, the domain hasn’t lived up to the expectations. At the moment there are a little more than 1250 names registered. About a thousand of them were registered during the first week of general availability phase in August of last year. Partly the situation could be explained by the high registration fee: it is about $170-$180. Another negative factor is competition with the domain .REISEN that belongs to Donuts. The name practically means the same thing, however, the registration fee is significantly lower - around $25. Although, in fairness it must be said that .REISEN cannot boast of a huge number of registrations either: for now there are around 4 thousand registered names.

Anyway, Dotreise registry felt it best to leave the game. The company Innovative Auctions is going to conduct the auction where domain .REISE will be sold off on February 27.
