More than $34 million has ICANN corporation raised from «last resort» new gTLD auctions. More than 10 new generic top-level domains were auctioned off by ICANN. The average «price» of the domain is a little less than $3.5 million. The most expensive string sold at the ICANN auction was domain .TECH ($6.7 million), the cheapest one - .信息 – $600 thousand.
Raised funds are accumulated in the special ICANN fund, the decision about how to spend them haven’t been made yet. Previously it was assumed that the money would be used to form Internet infrastructure in the underdeveloped countries or to promote New gTLD program. Quite recently one of the lost parties at the ICANN auction proposed to use part of the fund to compensate those companies that have passed all stages of the battle for the new domains spending considerable money but couldn’t win.
