Verisign presented the latest report on the state of the domain industry

Verisign presented data of its latest report on the state of domain industry. According to company’s data, at the end of the second quarter of 2014 the number of registered domain names in all TLDs has exceeded 280 million. The increase compared to the first quarter of the year was around 4 million names or 1.4%. In comparison with the second quarter of the last year global domain system grew by 18.6 million names or 7.2%.

Approximately 128.9 million of all domain names are registered in the domain zones .com and .net administered by Verisign. An important change occurred in the TOP 10 of the domain zones with the biggest number of registrations. Chinese national domain .CN, shows rapid growth and in the second quarter of the year has climbed from the seventh place to the fifth surpassing UK’s national domain .UK and gTLD .org.

The report also highlights that exponential increase in the number of requests to the global DNS system is one of the important tendencies. In the second quarter of 2014 the average daily number of requests to the DNS system in all domains operated by Verisign amounted to about 95 billion, the peak value reached 204 billion. For comparison, only two years ago the peak value for the daily number of requests didn't exceed 90 billion.
