GMO company, the largest Japanese registrar and one of the leading Internet providers, has officially announced acquisition of Z.COM domain. The deal amounted to JPY800 million, which is around $6.8 million. Automaker Nissan was the previous owner of the domain, it was bought by the company to promote its sports model Nissan Z.
According to the press release of GMO Internet, acquisition of the Z.COM domain is an important step in the implementation of the strategy to build an international brand of the company and enter the global market. The deal can be considered historic: Z.COM is one of the three single-character domain names that are operation in the domain zone .com today (also Q.COM and X.COM). A sum of money paid for the domain not only a record-making sale of this year. It’s now №8 in the list of highest-value domain name sales in history.
