Google lost a battle for .DOT domain to satellite TV company

Last week the fate of the domain .DOT was decided at the ICANN auction. This was the only auction conducted in November, the rest of new gTLD applicants preferred to agree among themselves or settle their contests in private auctions.

Google and satellite TV company Dish DBS applied for domain .DOT. The satellite company won by offering $700 thousand. Dish DBS plans to make the domain restricted and create an “exclusively-controlled online environment for customers and other business partners» by the domain. (Google's plan was to make it an open space for anyone).

The funds raised during the auction are transferred to a special fund of ICANN, corporation management hasn’t decided how to spend them yet.
