Internet society fully supports the initiative to encrypt web-traffic

The Internet Society (ISOC) Board of Trustees fully supported Internet Architecture Board’s (IAB) statement. IAB earlier stated that it is necessary to encrypt Internet traffic and encouraged developers of data transfer protocols to make encryption a by default option.

The ISOC Board of Trustees’ statement says that this measure will be an important step in a series of efforts taken by the technical community to counter spreading practice of pervasive monitoring. ISOC Board of Trustees also highlighted that users’ trust is a critical factor in development and expansion of the global network. Implementation of IAB initiatives can help strengthen this trust; it will reduce the possibility of tracking, intercept and interference to user data. (It should be noted that IAB after Internet Engineering Task Force has acknowledged that tracking user data should be considered an attack on the Internet, no matter who is carries it out.)

The Internet Society realizes that implementation of Internet traffic encryption by default can lead to a number of problems – not only practical and technological, but also economic and political. ISOC Board of Trustees expresses its readiness to actively initiate discussions on all these matters and participate in them for the speedy resolution.
