Amazon has won the right to administer new generic top-level domain .BOOK. This gTLD from the very beginning was one of the main priorities of the firm on the domain market, which is not surprising, since Amazon got world-wide fame as an online book store, selling books is still one of the important areas of its activity.
However, the competition was fierce: there were nine applications for the .BOOK domain, including such big players as Google and Donuts. Nevertheless, Amazon knocked out over rivals – yesterday the last competing application for the domain was withdrawn. Presumably, it happened after a closed private auction of applicants. As always in these cases the winning bid remains a secret, however, according to the informed sources in the industry, the victory cost Amazon at least $5 million.
