Terrorists of Islamic State used national domain of Iceland

Terrorist group Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) has intensified its actions in the cyberspace. Terrorists managed to create their own domain in the national domain of Iceland .IS. Obviously, this choice was made since the group in English is referred to as Islamic State and IS is its abbreviation.

Whois search on the site reveals that the domain khilafah.is was registered by someone named Azym Abdullah. September 14 the site was launched. It turned out to be information resource of Islamic State in English. The site contained a significant number of photo and video materials and also news covering the actions of the terrorists.

It is noteworthy that after the resource was discovered, the managing director of Iceland’s national registry ISNIC Jens Petur Jensson said that ISNIC had no authority to block the site. According to the rules, registry can apply this measure only when the resource contains malware, which khilafah.is apparently doesn’t. However, Sunday night legal justification seems to be found: an article in the rules of ISNIC states that all websites registered in the national domain zone have to follow Icelandic law. It was used to block terrorists’ resource. Jensson pointed out that this was the first such precedent for ISNIC.
