One of the most important and anticipated events of the month in the domain community was a start of General Availability period in the new domain .NYC – city domain of New York. Results of the start were summed up yesterday.
According to registry data, 26853 names were registered in .NYC domain after the first day of General Availability. 6398 of them were registered during Sunrise and Landrush periods. Thus, the net result of the first day is a little more than 20 thousand names. It’s a bit less that experts expected, according to some of them .NYC is one of the most promising new gTLDs. As of its first day .NYC is placed 17th among all new gTLDs by the number of registrations.
Andrei Kolesnikov, CEO at Coordination Center for TLD RU, gave a comment about first results of open registration: “City domains occupy a separate niche among new gTLDs. Modern cities play a major role in the world economy, culture, transport and political system and a lot of companies are willing to associate themselves with the specific place on the map. Probably, this will be one of the most successful categories of new domains and the first results of .NYC domain prove this – even though it didn’t meet expectations, the domain has a lot more names that the majority in New gTLD program.”
