Corporation ICANN has approved the allocation of Belarus internationalized (Cyrillic) national domain .БЕЛ. Thus, Belarus became 34th state to receive the right to use internationalized national domain.
Hoster.by will be new domain’s registry; it also technically administers national Belarusian domain .BY. Company’s webpage states that .БЕЛ domain zone will begin to function this year. “Despite numerous disputes among Internet users about the necessity of Cyrillic domains, we believe that launching .БЕЛ is a big step in development of national segment of Internet”, says Sergey Povalishev, director at hoster.by. “We believe that it is very important to have an alternative national domain, that is understandable by a wide circle of users”.
“More and more domains appear on the Internet that use Cyrillic writing – a total number of registered domain names in these domains has almost reached a million. We congratulate our Belarusian colleagues on this remarkable event and hope that launch of new Cyrillic domain will positively influence global domain space”, said Andrei Kolesnikov, CEO at Coordination Center for TLD RU.
