Several auctions for new generic top-level domains took place last week. Major registry Donuts supplemented its already very extensive domain portfolio. The company won the rights to administer the domains .MONEY, .VIDEO, .SALE and .LEGAL. The .VIDEO domain deserves special mention because Amazon was among the bidders. Amazon had planned to make the domain closed, and use it only for internal corporate purposes. Donuts’ win means that the domain .VIDEO will remain an open gTLD and anyone can register a name in it.
In addition, the company Minds + Machines reported in a specially issued press release that it won the auction for the rights to administer the domains and .LAW and .VIP. Uniregistry managed to secure the rights to the domain .AUTO after other candidates withdrew their applications presumably because an agreement had been reached.
