The number of registrations in one of the oldest gTLDs .net has been steadily declining since May of this year. This is indicated by figures in zone file. For the last three months the number of domains has decreased by 95590. Analysts suppose that this drop could be related to the active development of new gTLDs program. However, others believe that the decline can be seasonal, that it reflects usual slowdown in the summer. But for instance in .com domain no decline has been registered. It’s actually vice versa. For the last three months it has added more than a million new registrations.
Obviously, almost 100 thousand domains is not critical for .net domain zone, it has around 15 million registrations. But it is very unlikely that it doesn’t worry domain administrator Verisign that earns approximately $93 million on registrations in the zone.
