ICANN unveils recommendations on improving accountability and governance

ICANN yesterday published the report Enhancing ICANN Accountability and Governance - Process and Next Steps. As the official statement notes, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s historic decision to cede stewardship of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority to the global stakeholder community has sparked a broad discussion of ICANN’s activities and ways to improve governance, transparency and accountability.

During the public comment period, lasting from the beginning of May to the end of June, ICANN received 49 comments, which it added to recommendations made during the ICANN 50 meeting in London to compile the new report. ICANN stressed in the statement that this work is on schedule, which is important as the transition is expected to be concluded in September next year when the current IANA Functions Contract ends.

The report Enhancing ICANN Accountability and Governance - Process and Next Steps is available at ICANN’s official website.
