The number of names registered in new gTLDs has reached 3 million. There were 2031000 registrations as of beginning of this week. This is not only an impressive number, but also a good reason to look at statistics of new domains.
The leader is domain .XYZ, 455926 names are registered in it, almost 23 percent of all registrations in new domains. It is followed by .BERLIN (138000 registrations), .CLUB (98600), GURU (69000) and .WANG (56400). The number of registrations in other new domains does not reach 50 thousand.
However, it is too early to judge by these numbers whether this or that domain is successful. Experts recommend waiting a year or too and assure that the number of registrations may get significantly lower. A huge number of registrations were made during promotions (first of all this is true for domains .XYZ and .BERLIN), quite often registrants of the new names have no idea that they own names in new gTLDs. According to some estimates, the number of such registrations is around 500 thousand – a quarter of the total number.
Indirectly, this guess is confirmed by the fact that .XYZ and .BERLIN lead in the number of parked domains. 93,63 and 83,25 percent of domains are respectively parked. Interestingly enough, the most “working” domains from the top 10 gTLDs are .PHOTOGRAPHY and .EMAIL – the number of parked domains is the lowest in them – 63,19 and 65,23 respectively. The absolute leader by this criterion is domain .WEBCAM, less than a half of all registered domains are parked – 47,27.
