ICANN evaluated and decided upon the last among 1930 applications for gTLDs. It was an application from an Indian industrial conglomerate Tata Group for .tata dot-brand. An application has passed after Tata Group has managed (by yet unknown means) to receive support from authorities of Morocco – a country that has a province called Tata.
Evaluation period has started June 13, 2012 and lasted for more than two years. During this time 1783 applications passed Initial Evaluation. In 38 more cases an Extended Evaluation was needed and 35 applications have passed it successfully. Due to different objective obstacles another 211 applications were withdrawn, the same fate awaits 380 applications in the near future.
Marina Nikerova, senior deputy director at Technical Center of Internet, congratulated ICANN on this wonderful event: “It was a gigantic task and our colleagues from ICANN have done it very well. Almost 2000 applications in two years is a great indicator. The corporation was very responsive to the needs of the global community and in its work took into account interests of all participants of the program. There are a few gTLDs left that are still being debated among applicants, however even now we can say that a new world domain landscape has been formed.”
