As of yesterday’s evening, there were 1,499,880 names registered in new gTLDs. Thus, taking into account dynamics of the registrations, we can assume with high probability that when this news story is published, the number of names in new domains will have crossed another crucial milestone – 1,500,000 registrations.
Leaders by the number of registrations across all domains remain .xyz (290811) and .berlin (136895). These are the only two domains that managed to overcome a mark of 100 thousand registrations.
Marina Nikerova, senior deputy director of the Technical Center of Internet, gave a comment about this important event for the whole domain industry: “1,500,000 names is a big enough figure, if we consider that in half of new domains registrations haven’t even started yet, and many of the rest are in priority phase of the registration process opened to trademark owners only. The majority of them are concentrated in a few leader zones; the rest are niche domains and have a modest number of registrations so far. The real success of the gTLD can be assessed only in a year, when a time to renew registered names will come. Only than it will be clear if users really needed them.”
