Microsoft seized control over 23 domains through court action

A federal court in Nevada made a ruling to pass 23 domains that were earlier administered by No-IP.com to Microsoft. Thus, the court ruled in favor of Microsoft that appealed in the middle of June.

No-IP.com – is a brand used by Vitalwerks Internet Solutions, a registrar accredited by ICANN, to offer its services. However, its main field of activity is to provide services of dynamic DNS and create sub-domains in domains that belong to No-IP.com. Dynamic DNS technology allows to automatically update information on DNS-server to support constant connection of dynamic IP-addresses. However, its convenience has been appreciated by cybercriminals as well. Dynamic DNS allows to rapidly create sub-domains, use them to distribute malicious software and easily cover tracks changing DNS records.

According to Microsoft, 93 percent of their function time No-IP.com domains were busy distributing njRAT and njw0rm trojans that provided cybercriminals with remote access to victims’ systems. Corporation also claims that only last year it discovered 7,4 million cases of infection by these trojans, and that No-IP.com, despite numerous requests of Microsoft, couldn’t manage to provide security to its domains. It seems that the court found Microsoft’s arguments convincing enough.

No-IP.com for its part has issued a statement condemning Microsoft’s actions. It admits that their domains do “occasionally fall prey to cyberscammers, spammers, and malware distributors”, however, the company highlights that the present court decision will damage not only cybercriminals but also “millions of innocent users”. No-IP.com also says that it hasn’t received any requests from Microsoft about its domains and is willing to do its best to “resolve this problem quickly.”
