As of June 29 the number of registrations in new gTLDs has exceeded 1 million 300 thousand. There are 1360646 names registered as of today. Domains .xyz and .berlin are leading – in many ways because of the promotions that caused controversial reactions in the Internet-community to say the least.
It is no secret that .xyz domain continues its promotion run by Network Solutions that gives owners of names in .com zone the same name in .xyz zone for free. Domain .berlin has recently run a very successful campaign offering unprecedentedly low price of €5.55 for registration. As a result .xyz domain leads among new domains with about 227000 registrations. It is followed by .berlin – around 136000 registrations. Domain .club holds the third place with 77 thousand names and .guru has approximately 64 thousand. The rest of 144 new gTLDs haven’t yet passed even 40 thousand registrations.
According to Marina Nikerova, senior deputy director of the Technical Center of Internet, 1,3 million domain names in new domain zones is a rather big number, however, they are distributed very unevenly. "Among obvious leaders are domains that offer dumping prices or even free registration as a part of the promotion. The rest of the zones do not show such remarkable results, because are intended for more targeted audiences. Probably, this situation will persist in the future – several zones will show a significant growth, whereas the rest will have a relatively small number of domain names", said she.
