In a blog post, ICANN CEO Fadi Chehade elaborated on possible changes in control over the DNS. Currently, the root zone is controlled by the US Government, with ICANN acting as its operator, while Verisign functions as a maintainer. It basically means that any changes to the root zone approved by ICANN, provided that there are no objections from the US Government, are made by Verisign. The company also provides maintenance support of the root zone.
Fadi Chehade spoke out in favor of Verisign retaining its role. He also pointed out that after the transfer of control over the root zone, the responsibilities of the US Government as an administrator will be adopted by structures created by the online community.
Observers take a favorable view of the ICANN CEO’s statement. They believe that Verisign – with its huge experience in root zone support – can guarantee that the takeover of control will be carried out without any significant problems.
