Nominet, the .uk address registry, has announced the signing of a contract with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) which will enter the .wales and .cymru top-level domains into the DNS root zone. The new domain names will appeal to residents of Wales and Welsh people in general (cymru, in fact, means “Wales” in Welsh).
Given how the Welsh revere their native language and national identity, experts predict that the new domains will be quite popular. The period of priority registration for holders of trademarks registered in the Trademark Clearinghouse is expected to begin on September 1 of this year. Everyone will be able to register domain names in the new domains beginning March 1, 2015.
