Domain Name Wire, a popular and respected industry media outlet, published the results of a survey taken by domain investors and registrars. The purpose of the survey was to monitor how the domain community sees the program for new gTLDs in its current stage. Specifically, domain investors were asked if they planned to register domain names in any new domain zones during this year.
The votes were divided almost equally. Some 47% of respondents said they do not plan to register names in the new gTLDs. Some 52% assured that they would register anywhere between 1 and 1,000 new names, with 20 names on average, before the year’s end.
Another question on the survey – regarding the possible influence of the new gTLDs on the value of .com names – had some interesting results. Only 20% believe .com prices will go down while about 40% each believe that the new gTLDs will either not affect the domain zone or even increase .com values.
Over a half of respondents were confident that the new domain names could have an adverse effect on the value of other existing domains such as .info and .biz.
