Verisign has presented the results of its quarterly survey, Domain Name Industry Brief, which includes data for the last quarter of 2013 and annual results. The number of registered domains is growing. In the fourth quarter of 2013 alone, over 5 million names were registered, with a total of 271 million to date. This makes for a 7.3% increase compared to 2012.
The top 10 largest TLDs are .com (113.17 mln registrations), .tk (Tokelau – 22.10 mln), .de (Germany – 15.75 mln), .net (15.18 mln), .uk (United Kingdom – 10.55 mln), .org (10.43 mln), .cn (China – 10.29 mln), .info (5.79 mln), .nl (the Netherlands – 5.45 mln), and .ru (Russia – 4.93 mln).
Verisign also assessed the DNS query trend. Over the fourth quarter of 2013, the average daily number of queries was 82 billion, with a maximum of 100 billion. Compared to 2012, the average daily number of queries has grown by 6.4% while the peak load has decreased by 19.2%.
