A new gTLD for city-specific websites, .london, has been added to the DNS root zone. The domain community has serious expectations regarding the name for more than one reason.
First, the experts were impressed by the success of another domain name, .berlin, which ranks second in number of gTLD registrations. The population of the UK’s capital is twice as large as that of Berlin, which promises a huge boost for the city’s domain. A survey conducted prior to .london being delegated was another important factor. According to the results, one in four businesses in London wishes to register its second-level domain under .london. A half of those said they would do so because they are proud to do business in the British capital. Some 41% of respondents believe that .london could help them keep potential customers better informed about their products and services, while 27% see a direct link between the new domain name and prospective sales growth.
