Cybersquatting «with the best of intentions»

The first case of domain transfer under a Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP) became another milestone in the history of new gTLDs. As previously reported, famous German bike maker Canyon Bicycles applied with complaint on domain canyon.bike to World International Property Organization (WIPO).

Position of the domain registrant is extremely curious. He said that he acted “with the best of intentions”, since he believed that many companies were simply not aware of the launch program of new gTLDs. For this reason he registered several domain names that coincide with the names or trademarks of many well known companies (including Canyon) and later on intended to offer these domains to the rights holders. However, the decisive circumstance was that he offered domains not at all disinterested but for a considerable some of money. This was enough for the Panel to consider his actions as cybersquatting. By WIPO decision domain canyon.bike will be transferred to Canyon Bicycles in a ten days period.
