New Trojan malware appeals to the lowest instincts of Facebook users

Hundreds or even thousands of Facebook users have fallen victim to new malware, the latest in an epidemic of such scams on the world’s most popular social network. The Trojan was named Trojan FakeFlash-A by experts from Bitdefender, the company that discovered the scam.

The malware sends messages on Facebook that promise users naked videos of their Facebook friends. To make the scam more credible, these messages carry warnings that the linked materials are age-restricted and include the names of the Facebook user’s friends, experts said. The link redirects users to a fake YouTube website where they are prompted to update Flash Player in order to watch.

Instead, Trojan FakeFlash-A is installed on the computer, providing access to the victim’s contacts in order to send out “private video” messages to other Facebook friends. This malware is also designed to harvest personal data and user photos.
