The new top-level domain by Google, .みんな, became the biggest IDN gTLD by volume on its first day of general availability with 2,300 internationalized domains registered. The string means “everyone” in Japanese and is administrated by Charleston Road Registry, a Google spin-off.
It may still be early to speak about records, though. There is only one other IDN gTLD available for registration so far, dotShabaka’s شبكة. (“web” in Arabic), which has just 1,643 registered names.
About 230, or 10%, of the registered names in the .みんな domain are non-IDNs, which may be an indication of the world domain industry’s interest in the Japanese market. Google seems to be counting on this, as only one of the 17 accredited registrars it sells names through is Japanese.
