Guru tops diamonds in domain name registration

Donuts has published the interim domain name registration results in the 25 new top-level domains which the company had made available for public registration.

As many as 37,958 second-level domains (SLD) have been registered under the .guru gTLD, which, according to experts, is explained by the popularity of Eastern philosophy and the universal meaning of “guru.” It attracts not only the followers of Eastern spiritual teachings, but also those who consider themselves experts in a particular field, ranging from marketing to fitness and even plumbing, despite the fact that for the latter category, there is a seemingly much more suitable .plumbing domain.

The second most popular SLD is .photography with 21,801 registered domains. Interestingly, experts failed to predict its popularity and expected that .camera, a similar in meaning, but much shorter domain, would be more popular. The latter, however, ranks only 18th with 2,484 registrations.

The third most popular SLD, .today, has recorded 8,608 registrations. In fact, many of the domains that had been viewed as the most promising have failed to meet these expectations. Thus, .tips, which was expected to be among the popular ones, has a mere 427 registrations so far.

Among the worst performers is .diamonds, which has been registered only 148 times.

Donuts continues increasing the number of its gTLDs, and by the end of March will make an additional 19 domain zones available for public registration.
