I* leaders hold coordination meeting in Santa Monica

Leaders of the organizations responsible for coordination of the Internet technical infrastructure (loosely referred to as I* leaders) met last week in Santa Monica, California, USA. The two-day meeting was attended by ICANN President and CEO Fadi Chehadé, Chair of the Internet Architecture Board (IAB) Russ Housley, Chair of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Jari Arkko, CEO of World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Jeff Jaffe and the heads of the five regional registry operators, of Internet Society (ISOC) and of the Latin America and Caribbean Internet Addresses Registry (LACNIC).

They discussed efforts to improve overall Internet privacy and security; globalization of the functions of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA); the 1net initiative, website and new collaboration forum; and ICANN’s strategy panels and globalization efforts. The leaders also discussed preparations for Netmundial, a global multi-stakeholder meeting on the future of Internet governance held in Sao Paolo, Brazil, and for the 2014 Plenipotentiary Conference of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), as well as the Web’s 25th anniversary and W3C’s 20th anniversary planning.

I* leaders noted significant progress in many areas since their previous meeting, which pointed to the need for continued engagement of all stakeholders in the evolution of the Internet ecosystem.

The I* leaders also welcomed Kathy Brown, the incoming President and CEO of ISOC, and Carolina Aguerre, General Manager of LACTLD, an association of ccTLD registry operators in Latin America and the Caribbean.
