Equivalent of domain name in carbon dioxide has been defined

Concerns about environmental problems common among Europeans, are fully shared by domain business as well. Registry EURid, administrator of the unified European domain .eu, decided to find out how much damage does one domain name have of ecology. To conduct an ecological audit of EURid and independent company RINA Services S.p.A. was hired.

Its experts have studied document flow and power consumption in 4 offices of the registry in 2012 and also transportation costs. The resulting total environment load was divided between all domains administered by EURid. This way, the average load on the environment caused by one domain of the registry was determined: in 2012 it was 11.13 kg of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere.

To compensate the negative impact on the environment, EURid has already acquired emission quotas (sometimes called carbon credits) that are distributed in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol. Amount paid for the quota will go to the construction of 75 wind power generators in the Indian state of Gujarat.
